Series information and cast

BBC One's masterpiece modern take on the Conan Doyle detective classic, Sherlock has become a cult show since its debut in 2010. It is created by Mark Gatiss and Steven Moffat, written by Gatiss, Moffat and Stephen Thompson and executive produced by Gatiss, Moffat and Beryl Vertue. The criminal drama has been on the air for three series and a special on BBC One and PBS, and its long-awaited fourth chapter debuted on January 1, 2017.

Benedict Cumberbatch portrays the eccentric modern-day Sherlock Holmes, and Martin Freeman is Dr. John Watson. Holmes investigates mysterious cases in London with assistance from Afghanistan veteran Watson. The stories are loosely based on Conan Doyle's classics. Among the cast members are Unas Stubbs (Mrs. Hudson), Rupert Graves (DI Lestrade), Mark Gatiss (Mycroft Holmes) and Andrew Scott (Jim Moriarty). In a shocking development, the current fourth series also introduced Mycroft and Sherlock's sister, who has never been mentioned before, who is an evil genius. Sherlock series 4, as Cumberbatch himself has admitted, is “a real emotional roller coaster” and is the darkest installment yet, as the siblings come face to face in a battle that may prove the last one for any one of them.

Critical reception and renewal

The critical reception has been extremely positive, with practically all aspects of the production, such as brilliant writing, witty acting and talented directing, highly praised and receiving numerous awards throughout the course of the series run. Among Sherlock's accolades are BAFTAs, Emmys and a Golden Globe. The ratings on review aggregator websites are excellent – 9.3/10 on IMDb and 96% on Rotten Tomatoes only emphasize the universal acclaim that Sherlock is enjoying. Series 4 went out at an all-time low with 5.9 million viewers, while the premiere drew 8.1 million viewers. Moffat and Gatiss have mentioned that the writers have developed plots for a potential fifth series, which must have fans very excited in anticipation, yet the network has yet to make its own decision. We will be sure to inform you when BBC makes a decision on the future of the mega-hit, so please stay tuned.

Season 4 recap

BBC's Benedict Cumberbatch-fronted version of Sherlock has become a cult series internationally from the very outset. The multiple award-winning show has aired its greatly anticipated fourth series between January 1 and January 15, 2017. The three episodes were very uneven in the viewer response that they evoked, from sheer disappointment with the confusing series premiere, to utter delight with the second episode. The episodes are self-contained stories, but as far as the relationship between Sherlock and Watson - it is ostensibly better, with the two of them returning to Baker Street, set on staying there together once again. The fourth series premiered to 11.33 million viewers, and the subsequent two episodes averaged above 9 million viewers. According to recent rumors, a fifth series is a possibility, but beyond this hint, there's no official confirmation of another series. A renewal would certainly have fans jumping for joy, so we'll keep a close eye on the news and keep you informed.

My husband and I have just started watching this show. We just ended with the death of Sherlock (he’s not really dead) We love how he shows up in places at just the right time. Like when “The Woman” was about to have her head removed and he was the executioner under the veil. And the relationship between he and Watson is great. Watson is wonderful as well trying to keep Sherlock kind and grounded. Just a good show. I do hope it gets renewed for the 5th. season. The BBC knows how to put out a Quality series.

Sherlock is an exceptional show..well worth every minute of it's creation and the stimulating time watching it. Thank you BBC...keep up it's renewals. Hopefully creative writers can continue more stories after Doyles original ones run out. This show is a contender in popularity and fan base to Dr. Who...no doubt about it!
