Series info and storyline
An American medical drama series based on the life of Dr. Kathy Magliato as described in her autobiographical book Heart Matters, Heartbeat is an NBC project. The series is developed by Jill Gordon, produced by P.D. Oliver Inc., Molly Bloom Productions, Reveal and Universal Television and executive produced by Jill Gordon, Amy Brenneman, Brad Silberling and Robert Duncan McNeill. The series premiere took place on March 22, 2016.
The series centers on the personal and professional life of Dr. Alex Panttiere (Melissa George), a top-notch heart transplant surgeon at a cutting edge research hospital St. Matthews. Among the co-stars of the series are Dave Annable (Alex's boyfriend and colleague Dr. Pierce Harrison), Don Hany (Dr. Jessie Shane, hospital's chief of surgery), Shelley Conn (hospital administrator Dr. Millicent Patel) and others.
Current ratings and renewal potential
The series has premiered to a strong audience of 6.3 million viewers, an 18-49 demo rating of 1.4 and a share of 5. However, by the fourth episode Heartbeat experienced a significant drop to 3.9 million viewers, losing half of the demographic rating and almost half of the share of the audience. Critical reviews of Heartbeat have been mostly negative, as have the review aggregator scores – a 17% Rotten Tomatoes score, and 37 out of 100 on Metacritic, all indicating average to negative reviews. The reviewers mostly complain about the unlikable characters and stereotypical situations. The future of the series is undecided at this time, so please stay tuned for relevant announcements.

UPDATED May 14, 2016: Among the many series axed in the last couple of days by the Big Four networks is NBC's medical drama Heartbeat, canceled after the freshman season. Over the course of its short run it started off with 6.3 million viewers in L+7 and a 1.4 rating in adults 18-49 demographic, dropping subsequently to 3.9 million viewers. These numbers consistently placed Heartbeat in the fourth place out of four major networks in its time slot. The critical reviews were mostly negative, and the series generally didn't look like renewal material, so NBC's decision comes as no surprise.
