Series info and storyline
A new British comedy and science fiction TV series, The Aliens premiered on March 8, 2016 on Channel 4. It's a Clerkenwell Films production, created and written by Fintan Ryan, and executive produced by Petra Fried, Matt Jarvis and Murray Ferguson. The first series contains six episodes.
The series is set 40 years after the alien crash-landing in the Irish sea, and portrays their uneasy integration into the British society. Even though completely human-like, aliens are forced to live in a wall-enclosed community, where crime and hedonism are abloom. Border guard Lewis, who serves at the checkpoint between alien-inhabited Troy and the human world, finds out that he is the first half-alien to be born in the world and is torn by divided loyalties. The series portrays poignant social issues, such as immigration, bigotry and racism using this ingenuous and humorous metaphor.
Critical reviews, promotion and prospects of renewal
The very original and notable viral marketing campaign for The Aliens was centered around the “Fight Human Oppression” slogan and imitated a political campaign, interrupting some of Channel 4's programs in the month preceding its premiere.
Critics praise The Aliens as sparkly and energetic, the series premiered to over half a million viewers and seems engaging enough to keep going for quite a while. The gangster and comedy twists on the alien theme make for an interesting mix. Although IMDb gives it a mere 5.7/10 score, we might still see the social satire sci-fi series renewed for a second season. UPDATED May 24, 2016: The Aliens, the science fiction comedy and drama series with a socially sensitive slant fronted by Michaela Coel and Michael Socha, will not return for a second series. The most likely reasons for its cancelation are the less-than-impressive ratings and the unenthusiastic critical reviews for the first series, however, Channel 4 officials have been more diplomatic and explained the end of the show after just six episodes by the fact that there are too many series already commissioned for the next programming season.
