Series' background and storyline
Damien is a horror television series that premiered on Lifetime on March 7, 2016. Originally ordered by Lifetime, Damien was moved to A&E in 2015. It is based on The Omen film sequence by David Seltzer, developed by Greg Mazzara and produced by 44 Strong Productions, Fineman Entertainment and Fox 21 Television Studios. Mazzara, Ross Fineman, Pancho Amnsfield and Shekhar Kapur serve as the executive producers on the show.
The creepy sequel to The Omen revisits Damien Thorn (Bradley James), now a 30-year-old war photographer, the son of Satan and the Jackal, which effectively makes him the Antichrist. Damien, has, however, grown up unaware of the evil forces that contributed to his existence. Now the past is catching up with the protagonist who has to come to terms with his true identity. Ann Rutledge (Barbara Hershey) is helping him embrace his dark side and protects him.
Viewership ratings, reviews and chances of renewal
Damien opened to 753,000 viewers, dropping to 535,000 and 515,000 for the second and third episodes respectively. The series has a 7.1/10 IMDb rating and an unlikely 11% score on Rotten Tomatoes. Many reviewers note that while the early Omen movies are some of the most fantastic classics, the series is not particularly engaging and utterly lacks suspense. Dialogue quality and lazy acting came under fire as well. Is there enough potential in Damien to keep the audience interested? That remains to be seen, as the bigger part of the season is still ahead, however, the chances of triumphant success seem be quite slim.
Season 1 recap
A 10-part debut installment of the A&E network’s newest horror drama Damien concluded in the US on Tuesday, May 10, 2016 and the future of the show is still uncertain. This is mostly due to rather unsatisfactory ratings of the freshman series: the drama opened to 0.7 million viewers but as the first chapter progressed, the ratings have declined to an average viewership of just 0.4 million fans. Still, Glen Mazzara, the showrunner remains hopeful about the show’s future and already has very concrete ideas about new storylines and plot twists. Specifically, he hopes to draw out the parallels between Christ and Damien. Let’s see if his plans will come to fruition.
Latest news
UPDATED May 22, 2016: There will be no second season for Damien, the horror drama television series that is effectively the sequel of The Omen. As per the critics, the series lacked the engaging quality of the films that preceded it, and the cancelation decision was based on the sharply declining viewership, since it has lost approximately 30% of its audience between the series premiere and finale. Thus, no more of Antichrist struggling to come to terms with his identity and fate on the small screen.
