Stellar production team, plot and cast

An American period criminal drama from a star-studded creator team, Vinyl premiered on HBO on February 14, 2016. The series was practically immediately renewed for a second season, which was announced on February 18, 2016. The series is created by legendary Mick Jagger, Martin Scorsese, Rich Cohen and Terence Winter, and produced by Paramount Television, Jagged Productions, Sikelia Productions and Cold Front Productions. The series contains ten episodes, with the pilot episode directed by Scorsese.

Vinyl's headlined by two-time Emmy winner Bobby Cannavale, SAG Award nominee Olivia Wilde and multi-Emmy winner Ray Romano as Richie Finestra, his wife Devon and Richie's confidante Zak Yankovich. Richie's personal and professional crises are set against the 1970s New York City hectic and fast-paced music business scene. His recording company American Century Records is going through a troubling time, concurrently, there is family trouble between Ritchie and his wife, until a life-altering event puts everything in a different perspective for him.

Ratings and renewal

The series premiered to 764,000 million viewers, gathering 687,000 viewers for the second episode and 533,000 for the third. Scorsese has also indicated that he plans to direct several more episodes of Vinyl, which should automatically increase the public interest. The volatile world of rock n'roll and everything connected to it is portrayed in an intense and passionate manner. Although the series currently has a very high average score of 8.2 out of 10 on the IMDb, the reviews seem rather mixed and many viewers have criticized the show for being inauthentic, clichéd and even pompous. Nonetheless, the network has decided to give the series a second chance and on February 18th renewed it for a second season.

Season 1 recap

A 10-part debut chapter of the new music drama concluded on the HBO network on Sunday, April 17, 2016. The 1970’s drama has managed to maintain a very solid viewership throughout its debut run, and has averaged more than 0.65 million fans per episode, giving the network a good reason for an early renewal. There has been some criticism of the show using every possible rock and roll cliché, but many viewers have still found it very entertaining and enjoyable to watch. In fact, rumor has it that Vinyl’s showrunner, Terence Winter has left after the series over some creative differences and will be replaced by Scott Z. Burns. It would be interesting to see whether this changes the feel of the story. As per usual, the season ended with a lot of unanswered questions, giving the creative team plenty of opportunities weaving new storylines. Stay tuned for the premiere date announcement for Vinyl season 2.

Latest news

UPDATED June 23, 2016: As surprised as the fans were with the news of Vinyl's renewal in mid February despite its ratings decline, they are bound to be even more puzzled at the abrupt cancelation decision that was just announced in a statement made by HBO officials. There will be no season 2, and the stellar creative team – Martin Scorcese,Mick Jagger, Rich Cohen and Terrence Winter (although Winter was set to be replaced as showrunner in season 2) - could not do much about it. Stay tuned just in case HBO managers change their minds regarding Vinyl once again.

WTF , you got to be kidding me. HBO I'm cancelling my subscription ! You would rather put some bullsh*t cops and robbers or gory zombie show on . Vinyl was one of the freshest and most interesting series I've seen in a long time. I have been looking forward to Season 2 ever since season 1 ended.
I hope it goes to a different network ! Goodbye HBO

The show took 3-4 episodes to gain momentum but by the end, I was begging for more. It made me laugh when I was not supposed to laugh. This means it excited me, the sense of story was great. A bit surprised by their decision to not have a second season.

My husband and I loved Vinyl! We told many of our friends about it (some after the 1st season was over) and they all seemed interested. One even entertained the idea of subscribing to HBO just to be able to see it! It's ridiculous and beyond disappointing that this show was cancelled before it even had a real chance to become known. Sometimes it takes a while for word to spread. It wasn't even advertised that well. I learned about it while watching previews in a movie theater. When I saw it on the guide for HBO, the name was familiar, and I incorrectly remembered it as a movie that I saw a preview for. After I realized it was a new series, I watched the first episode anyway, and I was instantly hooked! I had a promotional offer for HBO at the time. I planned to cancel after the promotional period, but Vinyl kept me from doing that! Vinyl was the ONLY reason I continued to subscribe to HBO! If Vinyl doesn't come back, I will CANCEL my HBO subscription. It's just not worth it anymore.

The only show worth watching on television and it gets canceled? Man, people have horrible taste. They probably didn't want viewers to get inspired from the punk rock/cbgbs era because it goes against everything corporate media stands for. Thanks [censored]s, it was starting to get good, and you've dissapointed a lot of viewers. Guess it's time to turn off my tv and create some havoc in the streets, I reccommend that you all do the same!

My wife and I never like all this [censored] that is on tv. We wind up watching the antenna TV. The old tv shows that had real comedy and futuristic special effects for the future. It was the only reason I got HBO.

It truly gave us goosebumps waiting every week. We let nothing take that time slot in our life. I hope they change their minds.

This show was perfect..Was so looking forward to seeing season 2 etc.. RAY was awesome..and unexpected in his role...It captured every nuance and subtley of that era to a T. I'm from that era...it was dead on...It also was so refreshing compared to the predictable shows ala Sopranos, Game of Thrones(ugh) and The Leftovers ....brilliant. Hope they decide to continue...maybe through Netflix.

Couldn't agree more Mock - except your view on Sopranos. For me, most disappointing decision since AMC decided to pull "Rubicon."

Sorry but Vinyl was a mess. I'm from the era, and this was a disjointed, convoluted gratuitous sack of [censored]. It did not deserve to be continued by those who gave us The Sopranos, Game of Thrones, The Leftovers and so many more.

I watched the entire series over a week end and was so excited for each plot and sub-plot. Are you kidding... This show is gripping and PS...amazing set, lighting and wardrobe. I know that details were paid close attention to as...I lived it.

So devastated it won't be renewed. I WAS going to subscribe to HBO just because of this series.

I'm dropping hbo because they cancelled vinyl !!! They left a lot open at the season 1 end . Aside from 1 other show hbo isn't worth the 12 bucks a month

Just bought and watched the entire first season in a week (as I suspect many others will do). Can see what provoked the mixed reviews given that some of the subplots (particularly the mobster ones) were cliched and totally unnecessary. BUT there is SO much to love about this series!!...some great and brilliantly acted characters, many absolutely beautifully shot scenes....and the MUSIC!!!....if the series gets another shot, just focus on the record label inner workings, the bands, the venues and the music guys....that's where the magic's at

I am devastated that this show has been cancelled after only 1 season. I thought I finally found the one show I loved - the writing, the actors, the period, the production, everything about this show has been exceptional. Cancellation makes NO SENSE at all. I'm sick.
