Series concept and production info
Bill Schindler, an associate professor of anthropology at Washington College in Maryland and an experimental archaeologist and survival instructor and anthropologist Cat Bigney undertake a retraction of our ancestors' route of migration. They went through 35,000 miles from East African wild savannah through the MIddle East, frozen Siberian tundra, and then into Alaska and the continental US. The Stone Age journey of the primitive people is recreated without metal weapons or fire, in a way similar to that in which our ancestors undertook the same route 2.6 million years ago. It took Bigney and Schindler seven months to complete the journey, survive and deal with the numerous challenges, hunt for food and make their own clothes without any tools. Even with their extensive theoretical knowledge and hands-on expertise in survival, Schindler and Bigney were sometimes at a loss.
The Great Human Race television series premiered on February 1, 2016. It is produced by National Geographic Studios and Global, and executive produced by Brian Lovett, Peter DeLasho and Robert Palumbo.
