Series production info and plot
Mr. Selfridge is a British historical drama television series that's been broadcast on PBS and ITV since 2013. It is executive produced by Kate Lewis, Andrew Davies and Rebecca Eaton and produced by ITV Studios and Masterpiece. The current 10-episode fourth season premiered on January 8, 2016.
The series is based on the real biography of flamboyant and daring Harry Gordon Selfridge (Jeremy Piven), the American founder of Selfridge's, a department store in London. The visionary businessman sets out to build the biggest and most refined department store in the world, and the intricate story of his success involves his family members, colleagues, partners and patrons. Both historically accurate parts and fantasy bits are tied together perfectly to form a lovely large-scale mosaic.
Ratings and cancelation
Mr. Selfridge has been hauling in excellent ratings, with the first series averaging just below 8 million viewers, but the current run has not been quite as successful. Some of the critics noted certain secondary storylines being dropped midway, and not everyone was impressed by the lead character's performance. One of the most recent episodes was seen by just 3.37 million viewers. The series holds a 7.7/10 score on IMDb, 63% on Rotten Tomatoes and 8.8/10 on TV.com. This series will indeed be the last one for the historical series. That decision was made in the fall of 2015, and was announced by show's stars Jeremy Piven and Amanda Abbington in their official Twitter accounts, when the fourth series' production wrapped up.
And so we shut up shop for the very last time. Good night and good luck. Thanks for everything. #MrSelfridge #wrap pic.twitter.com/bsUZv1M5i3
