General info and cast
The American pirate adventure drama Black Sails was created by Jonathan E. Steinberg and Robert Levine. The series originally premiered on Youtube and other online platforms and VOD services on January 18, 2014. The network debut followed a week later. Platinum Dunes, Quaker Moving Pictures and Film Afrika Worldwide are behind the production, Jonathan Steinberg, Michael Bay, Brad Fuller and Andrew Form executive produce the show. The fourth season of Black Sails premiered on January 29th, 2017 on Starz and concluded the series on April 2nd, 2017 with its final episode.
Robert Louis Stevenson's Treasure Island is THE pirate story of all pirate stories. Black Sails was set as a prequel to the book and takes place roughly 20 years prior to the events in the novel. Captain Flint (Toby Stephens), the quintessential hero of The Golden Age of Piracy, as well as Hannah New as Eleanor Guthrie, Luke Arnold as "Long" John Silver and Jessica Parker Kennedy as Max also star.
Overall ratings and chances of renewal
With an overall rating of a whopping 8.2 out of 10 stars on IMDb, 81% on Rotten Tomatoes and 7.9 out of 10 on TV.com – which are all well above average ratings! – this show should be able to run forevarrrr. Unfortunately, the story has simply run its course and with the fourth season Black Sails concludes the series. This is a huge blow for the fans of this show and somewhat strange, given those numbers. Usually, such TV shows will somehow be picked up by some spinoff series or simply another chapter is written and the story continues… Unfortunately, Jonathan E. Steinberg, co-creator of the show, has stated that as difficult as the cancelation decision was, the end of the fourth season is a perfect place to end the story naturally. So, Black Sails won’t leave the harbor ever again.

I know that TV is a very fickle, petty and cut-throat environment and that this isn't the sort of series that can carry on FOREVER, but wow... What sort of fool kills the goose that lays the golden eggs? Talk about killing your own momentum.
Netflix can afford to make a misstep now and then but Starz are pretty vulnerable as a new entrant to the market. Will be interesting to see if they can actually improve by getting rid of Black Sails but I wouldn't bet on it.
Jack Rackham got his first known command, as we know so far, by taking it from Vane, after the latter did not attack an English man-of-war, etc..
