Series info and concept
Chelsea Does is a new four-part comedy and documentary series that premiered in full for streaming on Netflix on January 23, 2016. The series is executive produced by Chelsea Handler, series director Eddie Schmidt and Morgan Neville.
Chelsea Handler, the outspoken comedian who hosted E!'s “Chelsea Lately” for seven years up to 2014, undertakes four different subjects in her new project – one per episode. These subjects are racism, marriage, drugs and technology. Chelsea Does is partly investigative journalism (Silicon Valley interviews), partly irreverent commentary, part hands on experience (tripping on Ayahuasca), part confessions. Among the people featured in the series are Willie Nelson, Kloe Kardashian, Al Shaprton, Chelsea's own parents, former president of Israel Shimon Peres and Netflix CEO Reed Hastings and many other Americans from different parts of the country and from various walks of life, religious and political persuasions, whom Chelsea Handler interviews in various formats.
Critical response and renewal prospects
It is unclear whether the series format inherently warrants a renewal, but it's certainly possible – there are so many topics that can be tackled with this fearless and personal approach. Critical reviews are full of praise for this compelling documentary series, although Chelsea has made enough infuriating statements on some delicate topics that are usually treated with extra caution. In any case, Chelsea Handler will be back on Netflix with her own talk show later on this year.
