Production info and plot
The Wizards of Aus is a new Australian fantasy / comedy television mini-series that aired on SBS AU on January 19, 2016. Immediately after the premiere it also became available to stream on SBS On Demand service. The Wizards of Aus stars Michael Shanks, who is also the director and co-author (with Nicholas Issell) of the series. It was, in fact, planned as a six-part series, but eventually came out in three episodes. The hilarious fantasy show is produced by Late Nite Films and executive produced by Chris Hocking, Nicholas Colla and Sumah Hurley. Michael Shanks also composed the music for the series and collaborated with other specialists on the visual effects.
The series' lead character Jack the Wizard (Michael Shanks) is exhausted by his life in the land of magic and its obsession with large-scale battles between good and evil. He makes a decision to move to the quieter human realm, choosing a Melbourne suburb as a place to settle down. Life becomes much simpler until he accidentally causes a catastrophe, and his background is revealed to the public. What follows is a charming absurdist comedy with silliness, excellent, albeit low-budget, special effects, elements of medieval fantasy and even a shark! Jack's adventures as he attempts to assimilate into the human world are brilliantly portrayed, and – yes – relatable, since issues of fitting in are universal.
Current season and chances of renewal
The innovative comedy series aired for three consecutive nights and garnered universal approval from viewers and critics. It is both hilarious and poignant, as it features a great caricature on the current social and political situation in Australia. There is easily imagined potential for a continuation in the series, with its groundbreaking approach to the crossover between comedy and fantasy that is not only interesting in itself, but also implemented in a truly genius manner.
