Series info and storyline

The second season of the American period drama mini-series Mercy Street premiered January 22nd, 2017, on PBS and ran until 5th of March 2017. The six-part television show is produced by Ridley Scott and David W. Zucker's Scott Free Productions in collaboration with Lisa Q. Wolfinger and David Zabel. On March 9th, 2017, the channel announced that Mercy Street will not be renewed for a third season.

Mercy Street is a period drama set during the American Civil War. It is part classic family saga, part medical drama told from the medical staff's point of view. The series is loosely based on real letters and memoirs by doctors and nurses from the Civil War period, and the producers point out that the majority of the series' characters have real people as their prototypes. There are two storylines unfolding simultaneously on opposing sides of the war, as the plot focuses on the lives of two volunteer nurses – Mary Phinney (Mary Elizabeth Winstead), an abolitionist from New England and Emma Green (Hannah James), a supporter of the Confederacy. Most of the cast members of the first season, including Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Gary Cole, Brad Koed Jr., Norbert Tara Summers, AnnaSophia Robb and others also star in the second installment.

PBS wraps up the period drama after season 2

When Downton Abbey finished, Mercy Street was sort of the picker-upper for the fans left behind, who needed a period drama fix for the coming year. PBS did extensive research to produces a beautiful TV series of high quality and the channel had very high hopes for this show for the future. And even though the series has had overwhelming viewer figures, as the first season with 14 Million viewers actually became the second highest rated period drama right behind Downton Abbey and the first three episodes of the second season alone raked in 6.5 Million viewers. But unfortunately the funding and also aligning production timelines seemed to be the reasons for cancelling the Mercy Street after just two seasons.

I concur with Robin La Nasa. Mercy Street should be returned to the PBS schedule. I was, and still would be a regular viewer. I am an avid Civil War History buff, and it is good to see good quality
historical shows on the air. This show, along with other shows of this kind have a good quality to
them due to the fact that, the historical facts are accurate, informative, and educational. I would like to see PBS reconsider their position on the future of Mercy Street.

I love this show! I am a history buff, and I love shows that bring it to life. The acting in this show is superb, and the writing is fantastic. I was so looking forward to Season 3! So imagine how I felt when I found that it had been cancelled. Please reconsider this decision. I know you cited schedule conflicts as a reason, but fans of the show will watch no matter when it is on! Please bring back Mercy Street! Thank you. Robin LaNasa

I just found Mercy Street on Amazon Prime. I am very disappointed to find out this show was cancelled. This was well done and worthy of watching (not much on these days considered quality).
Thumbs down to PBS and whoever made this decision.

Thumbs down indeed. They say it was funding but might it not have been the Anglophile snobbery PBS shows regarding American drama?

It is so sad to see that they are ending this after the second season. I always liked Mercy Street. I was such a fan of Downton Abbey also. It always seems that the good programming is ended so prematurely and the trashy/sleazy programs run on for years. PBS does a fantastic job of keeping their programs family friendly and so does masterpiece theatre. I just wish they could see that there are people out there who still enjoy these kind of programs and continue them even though we aren't the "majority". There is so very little (none now actually) that is worth watching on TV anymore.

I have been reading the comments on this page and they are certainly gratifying
As Production Designer on Mercy Street I can tell you that the research we do is extensive and deep. We do not cheat, we attempt to portray life during the Civil War as accurately as possible.
The writing is wonderful and our crew and actors work beautifully together, a family.
It is very hard to make the show and takes a long time, but I hope you enjoy the second season in January,
Regards

I am so eager to see Season II. Historical fiction is my favorite genre in books and movies, and the Civil War is, in my opinion, the most compelling chapter in American history.

I have been a faithful watcher of Mercy Street, and I have enjoyed every episode. I am a person that loves reading period novels, and I really do? Readers and viewers need to look back into time to see how far we have gone. Downton Abbey was a real favorite Television show of mine, a real treat back in time. Period piece novels made into movies, for instance, Jane Eyre and Pride and Prejudice, hold my attention and put me back into time, something I really love. The series, Mercy Street, seems as realistic as possible, and transports a viewer back into a historical time in our lives, All I can say is that I cannot wait till season 2 starts in January. I also loved watching "London Hospital," that was also available on Amazon Prime.

I'm thrilled that Mercy Street is being renewed. I've been searching for the next episode everywhere, not realizing that the first season had ended until now. So I'm ready and waiting for season two. I hope you won't keep me waiting too long. I'm a retired nurse. The scripts are very well written, the acting realistic and superb. The nurse heart in me relates to the anguish, exhaustion, skill, fear. and dedication of the nurses and doctors who care for the injured, sick, and dying. Please hurry with season 2. Thanks.

Stayed up way past my bedtime to see the first episode of Mercy Street with my husband. It is such a well written story that we watched in anticipation the 5 other episodes and were never disappointed. This is the first time since Dallas that we are excited about watching a series! Congratulations! Can't wait to watch season2.
