Show summary and storyline
Created by Peter Flannery, Inspector George Gently is a British TV series set in the 1960s and based on Alan Hunter’s 46 “Inspector Gently” novels. Produced by Company Pictures, the show originally premiered on BBC One on April 8, 2007 and returned for season eight on May 21st, 2017 with its last and final series, which consists of two feature-length episodes.
Martin Shaw plays George Gently, a Chief Inspector for the fictitious North East Police Constabulary, who is trying to deal with the increasingly blurred lines between police and criminals in the 1960s. The last season plays in the 1970s, when a lot of change is in the air. Faced with increased drug offenses and U.K’s youth on the brink of a social and sexual revolution, the Inspector and his team are investigating crimes portrayed in the books. The series opens in the early 1964 when capital punishment is still in effect in Britain, and progresses through the decade in all together eight seasons.
Overall ratings and no season 9
With viewing figures of between 7.4 to 5.4 per episodes it is not very surprising that Inspector George Gently made it this far. Averaging around 6 Million viewers, this series really has grown into an audience favorite and there will be plenty of fans, who will be very disappointed that the beloved show will come to an end with the current eighth season. According to the production bosses, the character came to a natural end, which is the main reason for the finalization of the show at the end of this season.

I hope some production company would buy the franchise and make new episodes even replacing Martin Shaw but hope not Lee Ingleby and Lisa McGrillis.
