Summary and Storyline
Created by and starring Chris O’Dowd, Moone Boy is an Irish sitcom that is based on O’Dowd’s childhood experiences as he was growing up in a small Irish town. Set in Boyle, Ireland, this series dates back to the late 1980’s – early 1990’s and features a story of how an imaginary friend helps a young boy survive in his flighty family. The series first aired on Sky1 in September of 2012 and has had a very successful three-season run. Moone Boy Series 3 premiered on May 13, 2015.
Martin Moone is a 12-year-old youngest child of Debra and Liam and the only brother of three sisters, all of whom make for one chaotic and scatterbrained family. Trying to find a different perspective on life, Martin’s vivid imagination comes up with a friend whom no one else can see. Sean, Martin’s imaginary buddy, helps the boy see life differently, become a better artist and come up with various adventurous schemes that make Martin’s day-to-day life much more interesting.
Ratings, reviews and possible renewal
This surreal, life-affirming comedy has been very well-received by critics around the world. Winner of an International Emmy for Best Comedy and IFTA Award for best entertainment program, the series boasts a score of 8.2 out of 10 on IMDb and 83% on Rotten Tomatoes. Despite the fact that fans have been begging for more, the show runner Chris O’Dowd has announced back in 2014 that the third season will be the last, as he is too busy with other work to continue writing Moone Boy. Given that information, it’s unlikely that fans will see Moone Boy series 4, unless of course O’Dowd changes his mind.
