Storyline and plot

Created by Sarah Lambert, Love Child is an Australian drama television series that focuses on the lives and work of employees and patients at a hospital in Sydney, Australia. The series originally aired on Nine Network in February of 2014. Currently in its fourth season, Love Child series 4 premiered on May 2nd, 2017.

In this series, workers and patients at a fictional hospital in Stanton House fight the unjust government system, which forces underage mothers to give up their children for adoption. Set in the 1960’s, the show depicts all of the struggles of the mothers in trying to save or later find their children, as well as the ethical battles of the hospital staff, the members, who try to fight their locked in emotions and just do their job, no matter how difficult it may be. Providing a great recreation of the important era of sexual and cultural revolution of the ‘60’s in Australia, the series shows the people of today what women went through at that time.

Overall ratings and a possible season 5

The average viewing figures per episode during this current season so far hovers around the 0.6 mark, which is a slight drop from the previous seasons, but the Award winning show scores amazing overall ratings, such as the solid 7.7 out of 10 stars on IMDb, which firmly puts this show into the top categories. The very important issue, which is depicted in this series in such a tasteful and honest way, plus the huge fan base of Love Child may just be enough for Nine Network to renew the show for at least one more season. .

Just letting all overseas fans of Love Child know that Season 4 has just finished airing in Australia. If you thought the 1st 3 series were remarkable television wait til you watch the latest, which is by far the best and most poignant of the series. The ongoing pivotal storyline concerns the switching of a baby at birth- there's several new and very likeable characters and naturally a wedding....no word yet on whether the series will continue production into a fifth series, as unfortunately the program's ratings were not very promising......

I realise this latest series of Love Child is now being shown on Australian TV and having really enjoyed the last 3 series, I do hope we get it in the UK soon. Love Child is the most authentic, recreation of the late 50s, 60s, and 70s I've seen and I've lived through those decades so I should know! They have the attitudes, clothes, hairstyles and of course the music - spot on! I also enjoyed A Place to Call Home and think it's crazy that it wasn't put on for say Sunday evening viewing when it would have got a really good ratings I'm sure which it's charm, plot lines and great acting.

Totally agree. It would easily follow the phenomenal success of 'Call the Midwife' if it was broadcast on a Sinday evening.
Why on earth doesn't the Australian Sales and Marketing push that point to Ch4 - and if they don't have any joy then offer it to the BBC (who already show 'A place to call home' and The Doctor Blake Mysteries' - both of which are excellent).

I second that Christine! I too lived through that period, and the attention to detail is *incredible*! I've been watching it with folks born in the '80s, and it's quite interesting - long streams of questions about "That's REAL???". Yes, that was ALL accurate. The unwed mothers homes generally closed up shop by the late 1960s to early 70s here in the USA, although I believe they lasted until the late 70's in Aussie Land (correct me if i'm wrong).

I am genuinely going to miss this joyful program...

I love this programme too, as I did Winners and Losers and A Place to Call Home. Where did Winners and Losers go? Could you please bring them back to a reasonable time for British TV?

I totally agree with you Sarah, I loved Winners and Losers, also A Place to Call Home, ( No more being made in Australia by the way, which made a lot of people angry.). Hope someone will pick Winners up again. ?

Further comment, as I'd written too much before!

Austalian Sales&Marketing staff for this programme should refer all the UK feedback to
ChFour

Or maybe, if they aren't legally committed to selling to ChFour, they could approach the BBC as they already show a number of excellent Australian programmes including A Place to Call Home and The Doctor Blake Mysteries, both of which are excellent.

Sorry, my iPad suddenly isn't allowing me to use figures in this Comments space, hence the references to ChFour!

(Writing from the UK)

Fabulous series (ditto 'A Place to call home' as mentioned by previous reviewer and shown here on BBC1). The Ch4 network consistently moved 'Love Child' around, with the last series (3) being transmitted in the early hours of the morning. Luckily I was able to set SeriesRecord on my Virgin TiVo box so it was always picked up.

Ch4 programmers should have the sense to realise that 'Love Child' could be THEIR success story to equal the phenomenal success of the BBC 's 'Call the Midwife' and should rerun it from the start on a Sunday evening where it would certainly get higher viewing figures than what thet usually show the . It just needs someone with imagination and foresight at Ch4 to realise. Or maybe the BBC could take over the viewing rights????!

As a forced adopted child in 1972 at crown st womens hospital sydney .this show gives me insight to what my mum went through having me at 15...she has told me what she went through and she can't watch this show as she know it would bring back memories she still tries to forget..the social workers ,and matron were not as nice or understanding as on the show..my mum was bullied and not allowed to leave till she signed those papers and was made to feel selfish and horrible at wanting to keep me..so she eventally gave in..i went to a home.i should never have been placed ,my mum was only told she had a daughter by one kind nurse. She never saw me..i met my mum at 22,im now 44 and we have had a close bond for over 20 years..i was born on my mums 15th birthday and we are so alike..even look alike..a great show and very close to my heart ..i just wish there more doctors like joan millar back in the 70 s in real life that were their for all these scared young mums....

Just by chance I came across this and have thoroughly enjoyed watching all three "series". The story lines have been interesting and has made me realise how far we have progressed in the last 40/50 years. The costumes, make up, sets and music are fabulous and makes me want to recreate some of the fashion for myself.

We recorded the final episode in series 3 and just finished watching it tonight. We have loved this programme and watched all 3 series. Exceptional attention to fashions, fabrics, hairstyles, makeup and music, plus the story line and characters. Excellent acting too. Roll on series 4.

Brilliant series showing us just how tough life was back then. My wife and I were born in the fifties but we're so unaware growing up just how bad things were in some areas of life.
Top class acting, brilliant writing and a music score to die for!!
We live in the UK and really hope Channel 4 / More 4 decide to show series 4 and if so, don't tuck it away at 2.20 in a morning.
This deserves prime time and they could probably repeat the first three series and achieve really good ratings prior to showing the fourth series.
Thank you to all concerned with the production for a brilliant show.

Love love this show. The acting is brilliant. Would love to see what happens to the characters in the next series. Sad to think that these story lines actually happened when young unmarried girls and pregnant in the 60's and 70's.

I am watching this in England - currently nearing the end of Series 3. It is an excellent portrayal of the way unmarried pregnant girls were treated, and of course also brings up the matter of skin colour. I absolutely love it and hope Channel 4 here will show it, as they have the first three series.
