Storyline and plot
Written by Paul Rutman, Indian Summers is a British historical fiction drama television series that focuses on a group of socialites who spend several summers at the foothills of the Himalayas during the British rule, in the early 1930s. Produced by New Pictures, PBS and Biscuit Films, Indian Summers premiered on Channel 4 on February 15, 2015. In the U.S. the program aired on September 27, 2015 on PBS as part of the channel’s Masterpiece collection. The current second series debuted on March 13, 2016.
Set in Simla, India, this series explores the struggle of the British Indian subjects with the British Raj. Starring Oscar nominee Julie Walters, this is a drama that focuses on politics, passion and power told from both British and Indian perspectives. It is during the time that the series portrays that the Indians began to call for national independence, which quickly left the world’s most powerful empire helpless.
Current season, ratings and renewal chances
Although the series’ viewership fell quite a bit between the first and last episodes of the premiere series – 4.82 and 1.83 million viewers respectively – the series is still a hit in Great Britain and the U.S, and was renewed for a second run. The latter has premiered to 1.99 million viewers, and dropped to 1.48 million for the subsequent episode. Boasting a score of 7.4 out of 10 on IMDb, and an 82% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, this is a compelling drama full of romance and passion, as well as the strongly motivated human struggle for independence. A renewal is a likely possibility, so please stay tuned for relevant announcements.
Latest news
UPDATED April 25, 2016: In a relatively predictable, but unfortunate, move, ITV has canceled Indian Summers after two series. The series enjoyed the support of the critics, but the viewership ratings have made it vulnerable. The very decent series premiere audience of 4.82 million viewers decreased more than twofold by the end of the first series, and fell further during the second installment. With the new series lineup for 2017, space had to be made, and, regrettably, Indian Summers got the axe.
