Production info and plot
Donny! is a new American original sitcom series that debuted on USA on November 10, 2015. The comedy show is created by Donny Deutsch and Angie Day, produced by Left/Right and is set to contain a total of 6 half-hour episodes.
Donny Deutsch is the head of an advertising agency, single father and TV personality, who hosts Big Idea, a lifestyle counseling show on CNBC. Now he's also the star of his own sitcom who plays a fictionalized version of himself. The series is soft-scripted, which means that the improvisational element is strong here, so Donny, even though he's playing a fictional character, still gets to make personal choices about his acting, so we can't just blame the scriptwriters for the pitfalls.
Reviews and renewal prospects
The show's been ripped to shreds by critics and viewers for so many reasons that might bring us out of format if we attempted to enumerate them all. It's the extent of Donny's conceit and rudeness, complete lack of substance, excessive shirtless appearances by lead character, in-your-face product placement... The USA network does bill Donny! as a “satirical look at wealth, the media and modern romance”, but the satire is mostly lost for the lack of funny moments beyond utterly sexist or lesbian jokes. The ratings are also uninspiring, with the 0.270 million viewers and a 0.2 rating in the L+3 18-49 demographic. In our opinion, the chances of Donny! coming back for another season are slim – but that might partly be wishful thinking.
