Summary and plot

Royal Pains is an American comedy-drama television series that follows a young doctor who moves from a New York emergency room to the Hamptons and becomes the on-call doctor for the area’s rich and famous. The series first premiered in June of 2009 and has had a very well-received 7 season run. Royal Pains Season 8 premiered on USA on May 18, 2016.

Hank Lawson was a young emergency room doctor wrongfully accused of a patient’s death. Blacklisted by the medical community, he’s encouraged by his younger brother to move to the Hamptons and become a private medical doctor for the area’s many wealthy inhabitants. Although this seems like a dream come true, to Hank doing well for himself isn’t the only motivation, so he also attends to those who are in need of care, but are unable to pay.

Current season, ratings and renewal chances

Royal Pains has been one of the highest-rated USA Network shows, although its viewership has gone down from over 5 million per episode to just 1.6 million. Scoring a solid 58% on Rotten Tomatoes and 7 out of 10 on IMDb, this series still has millions of loyal followers, which is why it’s not surprising that the network renewed it for season 8 at the same time it picked up season 7. It has also announced that the eighth season ill be the final one for the series. The current season of the Hamptons-set medical drama features a musical episode and an episode that will transport the audience to Hong Kong. Even though the viewership has dropped considerably over the course of the series' run, it was still one of the most popular USA network series for season 7, with an average over 3 million total viewers and over a million in the most coveted adult demos (18-49 and 25-54). Andrew Lenchewski and Michael Rauch expressed their sadness and gratitude as they thanked all who were involved in the production of Royal Pains.

Season 8 recap

The last one of the USA network's “blue skies” series has come to the end of its eight-season run on July 6, 2016. The season and series finale of the medical comedy/drama Royal Pains has concluded an era for USA, and the new period in the channel's development is marked by the likes of the dark and edgy Mr. Robot. The show concluded with an audience of 1.8 million viewers, a two-season high, and a 0.31 rating in the 18-49 demo. The final episode, “Uninterrupted”, wraps up all the loose ends and lets the audience be satisfied with the way in which their favorite characters live happily ever after. Hank briefly considers Boris's offer to leave Hamptons with him, but goes to Africa instead and commits to a relationship with Jill. In the flash forward that concluded the series they are seen together in the Hamptons again, but without any explanation of whether it is a vacation or their home again. Evan and Paige become happy parents of twins and three foster children and move into the estate that Boris leaves to Evan when he departs from the Hamptons. Thus the series is laid to rest with everyone in the best of predicaments, and the fans can at least find solace in this thought.

I became acquainted to Royal Pains through my husband, but never had the time to sit and watch. I've since retired and while surfing Netflix, I came across Royal Pains. I began with season 1 and would watch 3 sometimes 4 episodes a night! My 19 yr old grandson would sit and pretend to be on fb, all the while was hooked, too. I was saddened after we finished season 7 and Netflix didn't have season 8:( Now I learn I can watch season 8, but the series is cancelled! We finally have a good show.......

It is unfortunate that Royal Pain is being canceled I have become very attached to all the characters. This program provides good quality entertainment. I agree that the long length between seasons could effect ratings.

We enjoy this show very much but feel that the long time in between seasons may be the reason for lack of following. Also agree that they take away the really good, well written shows and replace them with mindless garbage. We will miss Royal Pains and can only hope that it will be picked up by a smarter network.

Why do they constantly cancel good shows and keep crud like "reality" shows going that are absolutely ridiculous and totally uninteresting? I will keep hoping that the powers that be will finally come to their senses and bring the show back.

I have been a loyal follower/viewer from day one. I happen to be a medical professional myself and enjoy this show immensely even though I find some of the medical procedures, treatments and CPR questionable! It's a shame that a show that covers it all will not be continuing it's series! I was looking forward to Hank finding his true love, Evan and Paige having a baby and Divya becoming a Doctor and finally, Jeremiah finding someone too! I really wish the networks would focus more on this instead of all the reality [censored] on TV and focus more on wholesome tv series again!

I think viewership may have dropped because of the whole Boris thing becoming a little far fetched plus Paige & Evan have become a little comic book cutesy. I liked Paige better when she was a little spoiled and entitled. She was edgier. However, it's a great show and I will miss it.

I cannot accept the fact that such a great show (without violence) is going off the air. I look forward to it coming back every year. I do agree that Hank should have a love to end the series.
I have always enjoyed the acting of Mark and look forward to seeing him in other shows

I felt complete sadness when I learned that season 8 is the last season. All I ask of script writers is that you give hank what he has aways searched for. Love. I think Divya could be interesting or even a revamp of Jill. But just give him love. Thanks.

I am very sad that season 8 will be the final one for Royal Pains. I starred watching about season 3 so I went back on Netflix and watched them all. This has been the most enjoyable series I have ever watched. It always transported me to another place and the actors were all very wonderful to watch. Yes, sad indeed.

I totally agree with Cindy-Almost word for word what I was thinking, and I cried like a baby on Wednesday's last show. I will not be watching USA anymore. I am done with the [censored] series, but this is what they want-edgier stuff. So be it!!
