Summary and storyline
Best Friends Whenever is a new American teenage live action comedy about two best girl friends who are given the ability travel in time. Created by Jed Elinoff and Scott Thomas for the Disney Channel, the show debuted on June 26, 2015, and season 2 premiered on July 25, 2016.
On the heels of a highly anticipated Disney Channel original movie “Teen Beach 2”, comes a teen comedy series that stars up-and-coming Disney stars. Best Friends Whenever follows Cyd (Landry Bender) and Shelby (Lauren Taylor) as best friends living together while Cyd’s parents are away on an archeological dig in Peru. The girls are given the ability to time travel after an accident in one of their neighbor’s science lab.
Viewership and chances of renewal
Following a whole lot of hype, Best Friends Whenever season 1 premiered on the Disney Channel to a healthy 3.54 million viewers. However the show began to slip in ratings, dropping down to just 1.7 million in the last episode of season. Critics have also been lukewarm in their reviews of the show, with some criticizing the writing, acting and certain inconsistencies within the plot lines. Some bloggers have even gone as far as recommending people to not watch the show. The second season is averaging about 1.2 million viewers and a 0.2 rating in the 18-49 demo. The future isn’t looking very bright for Best Friends Whenever, but no announcements have been made the network yet, so please stay tuned for relevant news.

UPDATED March 16, 2017: Having wrapped up its sophomore installment in November of last year, a live-action comedy Best Friends Whenever has been officially axed by Disney Channel after two chapters – there will be no Season 3 for the show. The sad news was also confirmed by the star of the show Landry Bender, who posted a heartwarming message on her Tumbler blog thanking the creators of the comedy series and its fans. The teenage comedy series boasted pretty positive reviews from the audience and a solid 5.8 approval score on IMDb, but as we know all too well, networks make decision based primarily on viewer ratings.
