Storyline and cast
Cuffs is a new British police procedural drama series that premiered on October 28, 2015 on BBC One. It chronicles the lives of front line police officers in Brighton and around Sussex. The series is executive produced by Will Gould and Julie Gearey and produced by Tiger Aspect.
The show follows both professional and personal affairs of the South Sussex Police officers. There are typical, yet drama-packed incidents that the officers face on a day-to-day basis. Each story may be authentic enough, however, the unlikely intensity with which the events pile up in each episode has raised credibility questions from the reviewers. Cuffs stars Ashley Walters (PC Ryan Draper), Jacob Ifan (PC Jake Vickers), Amanda Abbington (DS Jo Mofati), Peter Sullivan (Chief Superintendent Robert Vickers) and others – a cast that really sells the show. There are affairs on the job, a child abduction that takes place right in front of the policemen, but is not recognized, a booby-trap at a cannabis farm, a nudist beach and a racist attack seconds later – what else does Cuffs have in store for us? The series' somewhat unusual twist lies in that it seems to be more sympathetic of the understaffed, underpaid and under-appreciated police force than a typical police drama series is.
Cuffs, the first original pre-watershed BBC drama in eight years, has had a solid start on its premiere night, attracting 4,2 million viewers. It's a little too early for conclusive statements on the show's fate, but it seems quite possible that we will see more of the men and women of the South Sussex Police in the years to come.

Updated December 21, 2015: The series' future seemed just fine until right after the first season finale an announcement came out that the show's not going to be renewed. Cuffs' premiere intrigued 4.2 million viewers, which is an excellent figure. The reviews have generally been positive, although some criticized it for being a very stereotypical show. Maybe there are just one too many crime dramas around, and Cuffs, the newcomer, just had to be axed.
