River is a new British television drama series consisting of six parts. Created and written by Abi Morgan and produced by Kudos, it premiered on BBC One on October 13, 2015 and then on November 18, 2015 on Netflix for the international audience.
This television series goes far beyond a police procedural, it is an engaging, intense and creepy psychological drama with a tormented DI John River brilliantly rendered by the star of the series, Stellan Skarsgård. “Manifests”, or what is usually referred to as ghosts (quite a variety - from a recently murdered fellow detective to a Victorian-era serial killer who habitually quotes Plato), haunt the detective, as he descends deeper and deeper into psychological distress. The investigation is the not the essence of River's plot (although it's certainly there, dense and intriguing), but Skarsgård's powerhouse performance overshadows the criminal collisions. It's a series about personal demons, grief and tragedy.
River received very high critical acclaim, attracting 3,88 million viewers on its premiere night, edging out all of its competitors, and mesmerized the audience throughout the six episodes. Will BBC One renew River for another series of compelling action on all levels – psychological and real-life? The critics and the viewers aren't always in agreement, but this might be the case when both would vouch for a continuation. If we consider the “manifests” to be symbolic of River's psychological problems, rather than the follow the straightforward supernatural interpretation, there's no wonder that the troubled detective's story touched the hearts of so many.

There's so much garbage on TV that canceling a winner is mind boggling.
Nothing made in and shown on US TV can compare with this. The writing is brilliant, the actors extraordinary and I cried at end of episode 6. You've missed out on continuing a superior series. Shame on you.
We 3 definitely vote for more seasons!!!
"There should be more than one word for love........"
And there should be more than one series of River!!!
Although I must admit, I am somewhat afraid a second series would destroy the beautifully wrapped perfection of the first, but yes I do want MORE.
