Series plot and cast
Winners & Losers is an Australian comedy and drama TV series that revolves around the fictional lives of four young women who were branded as “the losers” in high school but are out to prove the world wrong. Created by Bevan Lee (A Place to Call Home) and executive produced by Julie McGauran and John Holmes, the show premiered on Australia’s the Seven Network on March 22, 2011. The fifth series aired on July 5, 2016.
Winners & Losers is set ten years after graduating high school, where the girls who were dubbed as “the losers”, are now women who meet each other at the reunion, resuming their friendships and re-branding themselves as “the winners.” Staring Melissa Bergland, Melanie Vallejo, Virginia Gay, Francis Greenslade, Sarah Grace, Denise Scott, and Tom Wren, among others, the show has aired for five consecutive seasons.
Critical acclaim and cancelation
The show is the top-rated locally produced drama series for Seven Network. It has been nominated for several awards, including the prestigious 2012 AACTA Television Awards and the 2012 Logie Awards. Melissa Bergland finally won the 2014 Logie Award for Most Popular New Female Talent. The current fifth series contains just half of the previous series’ episode order – only 13 parts have been ordered by the network. In another, far less fortunate bit of news for the fans – the upcoming chapter is slated to be the series' last, as was confirmed in an interview with Angus Ross, Seven's director of programming. Series 5 recap
The fifth and final series of popular award-winning Australian dramedy Winners and Losers has concluded on Seven on September 12, 2016. The last series of the show was a powerful one, full of temptation, love, failures and rebounds and betrayal. The final episode featured Sophie, Frances and Jenny participating in a documentary film, as different, some of them very wild, versions of the women’s futures were presented, detailing what each of their lives would be like if they had spent their money in a different manner. 0.711 million viewers (consolidated numbers) tuned in to see the series finale, which was the series high of the shortened 13-episode fifth chapter. The show has been canceled despite excellent viewer response, most probably due to the significant decline in viewership over the course of the five-series run.
