Basic info and plot

Behind Bars: Rookie Year is a new American documentary television series that delves into he world of rookie correction offers during their first year on the job inside one of America’s most perilous prisons. Produced by Lucky 8 TV production company for A&E Network, season 1 of the show premiered on August 6, 2015, and season 2 followed on August 25, 2016.

Filmed at the Penitentiary of New Mexico in Santa Fe, the groundbreaking docu-series highlights one of the most dangerous jobs in New Mexico. As novice correctional officers try to deal with frustrating situations and criminals that think they know it all, viewers gain a glimpse at what its really like to work in an environment full of felons.

In season 1 of Behind Bars: Rookie Year, viewers meet new officers Zach, Francisco, Andrew, Cohen, Keith, Carlos, Bruce, Tyler and Ariel, one of only four women in cadet training. Some recruits seem cocky and tough at first, but officer Aaron Bell lets them know right away that they will be stepping into the prisoners' house and need to develop the tools to defend themselves against inmates and assert their authority. Most of the guards are taking the job because they want a career in law enforcement, others just need to make ends meet, while still others have dreamt of this their whole life.

I also think that Behind Bars: Rookie Year should be renewed!! Without a doubt it should be renewed. I watch EVERY episode - every single one! And I really want to see how the CO's do. Plus it's really nice to see how they grow.

It was also really cool to watch the current "rookies" helping helping the newer rookies.

Lilly is useless. Hire her bc she is female... notice how she always has a male with her. Wants the job but wants to play the helpless female.... that baby voice and mumbling shows her ability.

Why did they put that weak little girl in there? She needs to quit before someone attacks her or something. They shouldn't hire weak people.

Lily is going to make it as a prison guard. She is not flirting. Sthe will realize that in order to receive respect from these inmates she needs to show her strengh and they can't be her friends. They are mostly repeat offenders and hardened criminals who can't be rehabilatated.

Adios, Amigos!

Lily is not cut out for the job you could hear it in her voice my advice is to cut the sweet little girl voice speak up and when you speak don't do it softly to the inmates when inmate flirt with you instead of smiling at them write them up I seen that she smiled at one of the inmates when he asked her for a gangbang but frowned upon the guy who called her a Mexican woman who wanted to eat beans

The "officer" girl Lily you can tell that she likes the attention and the reason they are not taking her seriously is because she is flirting and smiling at all the inmates

People make mistakes in life and there are people that are wrongfully convicted. You don’t know anyones situation KAREN. This is whats wrong with society (he should have stayed out of prison) you don’t know their circumstances. And even if he does deserve to be in there prison is already his punishment; having to share a 7x7 room with another man and being behind bars is enough. NOBODY should be kept in inhumane conditions. Rebecca you are literally the problem with humanity and society these days. What about rehabilitation? What do you think will happen if you keep someone in inhumane conditions for years at a time then just all of a sudden let them out on the streets? 9/10 it is the broken systems fault and everybody blames individual people shows how much you really know and how much you really put into ACTUALLY FINDING THE PROBLEM…

Whats the hold up on continuing your seasons for this episode behind bars it's a learning experience for families in New Mexico we have young kids thinking that going to prison is cool. That they need to pick up a number is being gangster for the streets and getting respect help our state show the young generation prison its not a joke...

I hope they bring this show back for another season. I enjoyed watching it. It sheds some light on what prison life is like. Not only for guards but inmates as well. Even tho they don't show everything. Cuz there is alotta foul stuff that happens in there. And the inmates always get the short end of it. People think the worst when they think of prison and inmates. But it's not like that anymore in that system. It's really no longer prison. I did ten years in that system myself. So some of the stuff I seen and heard on that show made me laugh. Some of the ppl too. But overall I liked the show. It spreads a lil awareness of prison life. I just wish it showed more of the inhumane and unjust ways the inmates get treated. We really need some changes made in our prison system. Yes they are in prison but they are still humans. Just cuz they made some bad choices doesn't mean they are all bad ppl.

I am a wife of a sergeant CO at the Central NM Correctional facility where they house inmates from level 1-6 and he is supposed to be on the show season 2! He trained one of the new rookies! He works long hours and deals with a lot he has been a CO for 8 years now and deserves to show what he does and deals with every day! It's a hard life for him and our family! 4 16 hour shifts a week is no joke and this show is not scripted nor fake it's true it's real and it shows the real Heros who risk their lives to keep ours safe! I love my hunny and I know I could never be in his shoes! Bring on season 2 we are all waiting!

I am waiting to see what they filmed and what they will show, I was an inmate during the filming and am curious on if they actually will show the good things that went on in Las Cruces, NM like people getting their GED, the Crossings program and people trying to change their lives.

Good for you for working on your GED!!! I would love them to show some of the good stuff too. It's a very intense show and I think if I was in my 20s or 30s I would do that job as a woman. All you have is time to make better. I don't know what all programs are in the prison system but I think if the inmates had ways of getting degrees, work experience, church , I know there is a time when we feel it's time to get right with God. Knowing he forgives us. He is the judge not I. Congratulations on your GED. Krissy
