Storyline and cast

Vicious is a British television sitcom created by Gary Janetti (Family Guy) and staring Ian McKellen (X-Men) and Derek Jacobi (Last Tango in Halifax) – two of Britain’s leading comedy masters. Broadcast by ITV in Great Britain and PBS in the United States, the series first premiered on April 29, 2013 and has had a successful two season run.

Freddie (McKellen) and Stuart (Jacobi) are an elderly gay couple who live together in a flat they’ve shared for nearly 50 years. Freddie is an over-the-hill mediocre actor, with nothing but small parts to include in his portfolio, and whose career is nearly over. Stuart is a former bar manager whose main concern in life has become to take care of Freddie and their aged dog Balthazar.

Vicious is old-school comedy made fresh again by a stellar cast. Its deliberate old fashioned style is part of the joke and has been compared to such classics as I Love Lucy and The Odd Couple. Much like in the American classics, Freddie and Stuart constantly embark on humorous mishaps, hideous break-ups and heart-warming make-ups.

The six-episode season 2 premiered on PBS on August 23, 2015. McKellen and Jacobi continue to play characters that the viewer wouldn’t normally see in a standard sitcom. Despite the constant bickering, sarcastic remarks aimed at the other’s appearances, age and status, Freddie and Stuart have a deep love for each other and their friends.

While ITV has not yet announced official dates for the release of another season, the series creator Gary Janetti suggests that from a creative standpoint, there are no plans to end the show after the current season. Shortly after the premiere of the second season actor Sir Ian McKellen stated that he’s ready to begin working on season 3.

Updated December 26, 2015: There will not be a third season of this entertaining old-fashioned British sitcom. The stellar cast was absolutely delightful, and the network is not planning to end the series abruptly, but, rather, decided to air a one-off special in the early 2016. The special will feature all the main cast and will give the audience a glimpse of what it will be missing with the cancellation of the show.

I'm so heart broken. I love this show! I am a huge fan of comedy sitcom and this show, by far, is the most funniest show I have ever seen in three decades.
I cannot believe they cancelled it. My only hope is that someone in the United States, where I live, will pick it up and do something with it. It's just too funny give up on it.

Late one night, I came across this show it stunned me , but made me a fan in the first episode I saw. I waited for my partner to come home to tell him about this amazing show. He saw the one I recorded and we have spent many nights together laughing so hard at this amazing comedy that we soooooo could place each other in each character to the T. We have them recorded as to each week to watch together. So sad to here it is gone. Just watched what we didn't realized was the Finale. We stared at each other in shock. This had become a weekly ritual for us as I love Lucy and golden girls had been. Will miss this laughter it brought us each week. Googled it too, just to be sure. Still can't believe that someone doesn't pick this up. I guess we really have to by the DVD Signed!!!!! Sad American Couple

PBS doesn't have anything to do with "canceling" the show's production --It's produced by ITV in the UK, & if they didn't want to commission another series, they should go to the BBC & produce further shows~! (Get weaving & write the producers!) Besides, It's just catching on in the USA & I expect it will have a huge gay (& profitable) following as well, but you don't have to be gay to enjoy the humor. Indeed, it was the Logo network that brought back "Absolutely Fabulous" in 2012, so one never knows...perhaps it will return on another platform, good comedy is a rare commodity these days!

I think it's simply insane for PBS to cancel such a great TV show. It was one of the best i have seen lately and i watch tons of series. I've showed to tons of my friends and they all laughed their asses off.
We want third season!

Utter & complete disappointment to hear the show is canceled! One of the most brilliant sitcoms I've ever watched???! & I watched many. How is that a good decision?! I urge PBS, ITV & all others concerned to seriously reconsider this poor decision.

This is one of the funniest shows I've ever had the pleasure to watch. Why is it being canceled? I cannot imagine that it could be for lack of viewers & fans. This one beats big bang theory & Friends!! I think the producers & ITV owe us an explanation please.

What a terrible decision to cancel this series. We thought it was the funniest comedy on Tv. American or British. The finest actors and the best repartee. Shame on programmers not to recognize brilliance...

So sad to hear the show is not being renewed. It is one of the few episodic shows I look forward to and ensure I record each show. I echo another commenter's thoughts in hoping that the BBC might revive the show in the UK and we will get access to it after. It is amazing that it is Public Broadcasting in the USA yet most of the truly excellent content is provided by our friends on the other side of the Atlantic. This is a short sighted decision.

I saw the one hour special this past Sunday and was so disappointed. It was great comedy and a great cast. I didn't know what was going on and when I saw that is was the series finale I thought something had happened to one of the main cast members.
It was not up to the caliber of humor from the last two seasons and looks as if it had been slapped together in haste.
I hope that it will continue in the UK so I can see it. That's why I have a universal format DVD player. My PBS station in NJ talks about British programming but what they are talking about is Downton Abbey and they have no clue as to the plethora of great programming from the UK, and Australia. I can't believe the series is contingent upon PBS's canceling of it.

I just finished watching the Special Vicious episode, the final :sad: , I really was looking forward to this most talented group. What a pleasant time I've enjoyed watching true comedy at its best. I will truly miss the family that they created. I wish PBS would reconsider their decision.

I can only add my disappointment to other commenters here. It was a fun,well acted show with many laughs and also had great writing and directing. I actually didn't know of the cancellation until I saw SERIES FINALE on the special.

I am so sad it has been cancelled. I looked forward to this weekly. Love all the characters / actors in the show. Maybe consider making a seasonal episode to kinda update the characters. I'M GONNA MISS THEM SOOOO :sad: :eek: :cry:

I loved Vicious & the cast was brilliant! I am so very disappointed that the show was canceled. Please bring it back, air it in prime time o PBS and extend it to an hour show. The ratings and the fab base would only increase.
