Tina Fey, creator, and star of "30 Rock," is set to make her return to television with a leading role in "The Four Seasons," a comedy project based on the 1981 feature film that she co-created alongside fellow "30 Rock" alumni Lang Fisher and Tracey Wigfield. This high-profile comedy, Fey's first starring role since "30 Rock," recently secured an eight-episode series order from Netflix after a competitive bidding process involving multiple buyers just before the holidays.
Production for the series is scheduled to commence later this year, with Universal Television, Fey's home studio, handling production. "The Four Seasons" is adapted from the Universal Pictures film of the same name, which depicted the stories of three couples vacationing together throughout the seasons. The original film, released in 1981, was written and directed by Alan Alda, produced by Martin Bregman, and featured Alda and Carol Burnett in the lead roles.
The TV series adaptation is penned by Fey, Fisher, and Wigfield, who also serve as executive producers alongside David Miner, Eric Gurian, and Jeff Richmond. Alan Alda and Marissa Bregman are set to produce. Fey's production company, Little Stranger, Inc., is behind the project.
The original film, "The Four Seasons," starred a notable cast including Len Cariou, Sandy Dennis, Rita Moreno, Jack Weston, and Bess Armstrong. The title of the film was inspired by Antonio Vivaldi's four concerti, which, along with other works by Vivaldi, formed the musical score. The film had previously inspired a short-lived CBS series in 1994, produced by Alda.
This collaboration marks another venture for Tina Fey and Universal Television with Netflix. Fey's previous Emmy-nominated comedy, "Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt," co-created and executive produced by Fey, found success on the streaming platform with four seasons and an interactive movie. Additionally, Fey-executive produced "Girls5eva," created by Meredith Scardino, which moved to Netflix after two seasons on Peacock, with its third season set to debut on March 14.
