Barbie, a forthcoming American fantasy comedy film, is helmed by director Greta Gerwig, who co-wrote the screenplay alongside Noah Baumbach. Departing from the computer-animated direct-to-video and streaming television films, this production marks the first live-action adaptation of the iconic Barbie fashion dolls created by Mattel. Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling headline the cast, portraying the beloved characters Barbie and Ken, with a talented ensemble cast in supporting roles.
The film's journey began when Universal Pictures announced its development in September 2009, with Laurence Mark on board as the producer. However, it wasn't until April 2014, when Sony Pictures obtained the rights, that the project gained momentum. Over the course of its development, the film underwent several changes in writers, directors, and even the casting of actresses for the lead role. Eventually, in October 2018, Warner Bros. Pictures acquired the rights from Sony after they lost them, and Margot Robbie entered talks to star.
In 2019, Robbie was officially cast and assumed the role of producer through her production banner, LuckyChap Entertainment. Heyday Films and Mattel Films also joined as production partners. In 2021, Greta Gerwig and Noah Baumbach were confirmed as the director and co-writer, respectively. The rest of the cast, including Ryan Gosling, was announced in early 2022. Filming predominantly took place at Warner Bros. Studios in Leavesden, England, from March to July 2022.
Barbie is scheduled for release in the United States on July 21, 2023, distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures.
