General information and cast
Based on the eponymous 1996 novel by Margaret Atwood and adapted by Sarah Polley, the brand new Canadian-American period drama Alias Grace premiered on the streaming giant Netflix as an Original Series on November 3rd, 2017 with six 45-minute episodes for its very first season. The miniseries hails from the production companies Halfire Entertainment and Tangled Productions and is executive produced by Noreen Halpern. The cast features Sarah Gadon as Grace Marks, Anna Paquin as Nancy Montgomer, Edward Holcroft as Dr. Simon Jordan, Rebecca Liddiard as Mary Whitney, Zachary Levi as Jeremiah the Peddler, Kerr Logan as James McDermott, David Cronenberg as Reverend Verrenger and Paul Gross as Thomas Kinnear.
The novel is based on the true events experienced by Grace Marks, who was an immigrant from Ireland working as a housemaid. In 1843, Grace is imprisoned for the alleged murder of her employer Thomas Kinnear. The facts seem irrefutable. However, Grace claims that she has no memory of the murder and after ten years, psychiatrist Dr. Simon Jordan takes on her case and tries to help the woman to remember what happened. Some very unorthodox experiments by those trying to convict her and during the time, where women – especially those of lower class – didn’t have a lot of weight in their word and were very much oppressed, are featured in this epic and very sad period drama.
