On February 20th, 2017 a brand new drama music series called The Breaks hit our screens on the channel VH1 with eight bouncy episodes. Produced by Atlantic Pictures (II), the series is created by Dan Charnas and Seith Mann and executive produced by Darren Goldberg and John J. Strauss. The Breaks is based on the eponymous 2016 movie The Breaks and in April 2017 the TV show moved to the network BET and was renewed for a second season.
The TV drama series basically picks up where the original VH1 movie left off. In the 90s in New York City the golden age of creativity – especially regarding rap and hip hop music – was at its height, even though corporate America somewhat struggled to embrace this genre fully just yet. Back then, if you really went for your dream and worked hard for it, you could achieve it, which is exactly the motto of three young friends, who want to make it in the music business. The series follows Nikki her best friend DeeVee on their journey to the top. Afton Williamson plays the role of Nikki, Tristan Wilds is DeeVee and Wood Harris, Antoine Harris, David Call and Evan Handler also star, just to name a few.
