Series concept and production info
Banged Up Abroad (a.k.a. Locked Up Abroad) is a British travel / documentary television series that airs on National Geographic Channel in the UK and in numerous international locations. It was created by Bart Layton and is produced by Raw Television. The show has been broadcast since 2006, with the current tenth series premiering on July 5, 2016.
The series features travelers who have been arrested abroad for various reasons, including some who have been kidnapped or otherwise captured. The vast majority of the stories, however, involves drug trafficking and its consequences. Each episode usually features interviews with those involved as well as dramatic reconstructions of the events by actors. Both the events that have led up to the arrest and the captivity that followed are explored. In some of these cases the perpetrators are still imprisoned, and are shown accordingly in a jail setting. Sometimes the production crew revisits the country where the incident took place.
Current season and renewal prospects
The current series brings us stories from Mexico, Colombia, Thailand, Somali, the Phillipines and Iraq. Only three of the episodes are drug-related, the remaining ones are kidnappings and a possibly politically influenced capture of an American citizen. Banged Up Abroad is very popular internationally, and has a solid 8.3/10 IMDb score, which is based on a significant number of viewer ratings. There’s (unfortunately) no end to the stories that provide the basis for Banged Up Abroad, so there’s unlimited source material. Whether or not National Geographic decides on another season is still unknown, so please stay with us and we’ll keep you informed.
