Production info and storyline
Bates Motel is a US thriller television series that serves as a conceptual prequel to Alfred Hitchcock's Psycho. It is based on the characters from Psycho by Robert Block, which is the book from which Hitchcock originally drew his inspiration. The series is developed by Carlton Cuse, Kerry Ehrin and Anthony Cipriano, and is a result of a joint production effort by American Genre, Carlton Cuse Productions, Kerry Ehrin Productions and Universal Television. The series originally debuted in 2013 and is currently in its fifth season, which premiered on February 20th, 2017. This will also be the last and final season for the show.
The psychological thriller portrays mother and son, Norma and Norman Bates, who purchase a motel in a remote part of an idyllic coastal town after the death of Norman's father. The events that follow give the audience a glimpse into how a serial killer was forged over the course of his formative years, and how his complicated relationship with his mother has affected him.
Overall ratings and the end after the fifth season
At first glance, Bates Motel has very impressive overall ratings with a strong 8.1 out of 10 stars on IMDb, in impressive 91% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes and 8.7 out of 10 on TV.com. Therefore it is somewhat surprising, that the viewing figures do not really reflect these high numbers, because over the course of the fifth season, the viewing figures dropped almost dramatically, going from over 3 Million for the very first episode to only 1.34 Million for the premiere of the last series. The demo ratings went also down quite a bit, from 1.6 to just 0.7, which is over 50%.
There is no denying, that the Award winning actress Vera Farmiga in the role of Norma Bates was the main driving factor for this show. Her insane obsession with her son and through that her bizarre behavior and strange decisions made the series into what it became. But her death at the end of the fourth season may have been one of the reasons, why people didn’t tune in for the fifth season, even though she didn’t completely disappear from our screens.
In any case, Bates Motel has run its course and will not be renewed for a sixth season.
