Summary and plot

Created by Liz Feldman and produced by Ellen DeGeneres, One Big Happy is an American sitcom that follows an unusual trio that consists of a lesbian who is pregnant with her best friend’s baby, the best friend and the woman he’s in love with. One Big Happy season 1 premiered on NBC on March 17, 2015.

Lizzy and Luke have known each other their whole lives and have been there through thick and thin. When they find themselves older, but none the wiser, they decide that although there are no romantic feelings (considering Lizzy is a lesbian), they should have a baby together. Trying for a bit, they get frustrated and go to a bar to drown out their failures. There they meet Prudence – a free-spirited beautiful woman. Naturally, Luke falls in love and he and Prudence begin spending a lot of time together. One doesn’t have to be heterosexual to feel jealous, and Lizzy is not an exception. Although she doesn’t like Prudence, she has to deal with it when she first learns that Luke and Prudence secretly got married, and then learns that she herself is finally pregnant. The three have to make their strange arrangement work and find ways to raise a child together.

Ratings, reviews and possible renewal

One Big Happy was not received well by the critics or viewers. In fact, it is rated as one of the worst comedy shows on NBC, scoring 18% on Rotten Tomatoes and just 5.7 out of 10 on IMDb. It is not surprising, thus, that the network cancelled the series after just six episodes of the first season and will not be airing One Big Happy season 2.
