Basic info and cast
Dr. Ken is an American comedy television series starring Ken Jeong, who is also the creator, writer and co-producer of the show. The series is based on Jeong’s experience of being a doctor before he switched his profession and became a standup comedian. Old Charlie Productions, Davis Entertainment, ABC Studios and Sony Pictures Television are behind the production. The first season of the series premiered on ABC in October 2015, and season two followed on September 23, 2016.
Dr. Ken is a brilliant physician at a busy hospital who tries to juggle his career and family life. His self-centered teenage daughter Molly and 10-year-old odd, yet very intelligent son causes a lot of unrest, and his wife Molly continuously attempts to analyze him, probably due to the fact that she is a therapist.
Negative reviews and solid ratings
From the very outset the critics have not been too happy with Dr. Ken and were giving the series very low odds of survival. The low scores of 5.6/10 on IMDb, 26% on Metacritic and an unbelievable 7% on Rotten Tomatoes did not add any optimism to the situation. In light of the lukewarm reception, it was surprising to see that the network made a decision to give the sitcom another chance by officially renewing it for a second season. The reasons for the renewal, however, are rather clear – the sitcom delivered total viewership of 6.4 million people, which is the best result for a Friday night ABC program in three years. Friday nights have been notoriously challenging for television networks in their bid to deliver high viewership numbers, so the ratings were regarded as a major success. The current season premiered to 4.02 million viewers, and continues to average approximately the same number of viewers, so perhaps Dr. Ken will make it into the third season. Stay tuned for further information.
